Rapunzel
Había una vez una pareja que desde hacía mucho tiempo deseaba tener hijos. Aunque la espera fue larga, por fin, sus sueños se hicieron realidad.
Once upon a time there was a couple that had wished to have children for a long time . Although the wait was long, at last, their dreams became reality .
La futura madre miraba por la ventana las lechugas del huerto vecino. Se le hacía agua la boca nada más de pensar lo maravilloso que sería poder comerse una de esas lechugas.
The mother-to-be looked through the window at the nearby kitchen garden's lettuces. Her mouth watered thinking of nothing else but the wonderful thing that it would be to be able to eat one of those lettuces.
Sin embargo, el huerto le pertenecía a una bruja y por eso nadie se atrevía a entrar en él. Pronto, la mujer ya no pensaba más que en esas lechugas, y por no querer comer otra cosa empezó a enfermarse. Su esposo, preocupado, resolvió entrar a escondidas en el huerto cuando cayera la noche, para coger algunas lechugas.
However, the kitchen garden belonged to a witch and for that reason nobody dared to enter in. Soon, the woman no longer thought more about those lettuces, and for not wanting to eat another thing she began to get sick. Her husband, concerned, resolved to enter undercover in the orchard when night fell, to take some lettuce.
La mujer se las comió todas, pero en vez de calmar su antojo, lo empeoró. Entonces, el esposo regresó a la huerta. Esa noche, la bruja lo descubrió.
The woman ate them all, but instead of calming her craving, aggravated it. Then, the husband returned to the garden. That night, the witch discovered him.
-¿Cómo te atreves a robar mis lechugas? -chilló.
- how do you dare to steal my lettuces? - she shrieked .
Aterrorizado, el hombre le explicó a la bruja que todo se debía a los antojos de su mujer.
Terrorized, the man explained the witch that everything was due to his wife's whims.
-Puedes llevarte las lechugas que quieras -dijo la bruja -, pero a cambio tendrás que darme al bebé cuando nazca.
The witch said can take you the lettuces that you want - -, but in return you will have to give me the baby when it is born -.
El pobre hombre no tuvo más remedio que aceptar. Tan pronto nació, la bruja se llevó a la hermosa niña. La llamó Rapunzel. La belleza de Rapunzel aumentaba día a día. La bruja resolvió entonces esconderla para que nadie más pudiera admirarla. Cuando Rapunzel llegó a la edad de los doce años, la bruja se la llevó a lo más profundo del bosque y la encerró en una torre sin puertas ni escaleras, para que no se pudiera escapar. Cuando la bruja iba a visitarla, le decía desde abajo:
The poor man did not have a better choice than to accept. As soon as she was born, the witch took the beautiful girl. She called her Rapunzel. Rapunzel's beauty increased day by day. The witch solved then to hide her in order that nobody else may admire her. When Rapunzel came to the age of the twelve years, the witch took her to the deepest forest and she shut her in a tower without doors or stairs, so that she could not escape. When the witch was going to visit her, she told her from below:
-Rapunzel, tu trenza deja caer.
- Rapunzel, allow your braids to fall.
La niña dejaba caer por la ventana su larga trenza rubia y la bruja subía. Al cabo de unos años, el destino quiso que un príncipe pasara por el bosque y escuchara la voz melodiosa de Rapunzel, que cantaba para pasar las horas. El príncipe se sintió atraído por la hermosa voz y quiso saber de dónde provenía. Finalmente halló la torre, pero no logró encontrar ninguna puerta para entrar. El príncipe quedó prendado de aquella voz. Iba al bosque tantas veces como le era posible. Por las noches, regresaba a su castillo con el corazón destrozado, sin haber encontrado la manera de entrar. Un buen día, vio que una bruja se acercaba a la torre y llamaba a la muchacha.
The girl dropped her long blond tress from the window and the witch was lifted up. After some years, destiny desired that a prince go by the forest and listen to the melodious voice of Rapunzel, that was singing to spend the time. The prince felt attracted by the beautiful voice and wanted to know where it came from. Finally he found the tower, but he did not find a door to enter. The prince was enchanted of that voice. He went to the forest as often as it was possible for him. Nightly, he returned to his heartbroken castle, without having found the way to enter. One fine day, he saw that a witch got close to the tower and she called for the girl.
-Rapunzel, tu trenza deja caer.
- Rapunzel, allow your braids to fall.
El príncipe observó sorprendido. Entonces comprendió que aquella era la manera de llegar hasta la muchacha de la hermosa voz. Tan pronto se fue la bruja, el príncipe se acercó a la torre y repitió las mismas palabras:
The prince observed surprised. Then he understood that was the way to go up to the girl of the beautiful voice. As soon as the witch left, the prince approached the tower and he repeated the same words:
-Rapunzel, tu trenza deja caer.
- Rapunzel, allow your braids to fall.
La muchacha dejó caer la trenza y el príncipe subió. Rapunzel tuvo miedo al principio, pues jamás había visto a un hombre. Sin embargo, el príncipe le explicó con toda dulzura cómo se había sentido atraído por su hermosa voz. Luego le pidió que se casara con él. Sin dudarlo un instante, Rapunzel aceptó. En vista de que Rapunzel no tenía forma de salir de la torre, el príncipe le prometió llevarle un ovillo de seda cada vez que fuera a visitarla. Así, podría tejer una escalera y escapar. Para que la bruja no sospechara nada, el príncipe iba a visitar a su amada por las noches. Sin embargo, un día Rapunzel le dijo a la bruja sin pensar:
The girl dropped her tresses and she raised the prince. Rapunzel was afraid at first, because she had never seen a man. However, the prince explained with all sweetness how he had felt attracted by her beautiful voice. Next he asked that she marry him. Without doubting an instant, Rapunzel accepted . Considering that Rapunzel did not have way to come out of the tower, the prince promised to take her a pile of silk every time that he came to visit her. That way, he would be able to weave a stair and to escape. In order that the witch not suspect anything, the prince was going to visit his ladylove nightly. However, one day Rapunzel told the witch without stopping to think:
-Tú eres mucho más pesada que el príncipe.
- you are much heavier than the prince.
-¡Me has estado engañando! -chilló la bruja enfurecida y cortó la trenza de la muchacha.
- you have been deceiving me! - the furious witch shrieked and cut the girl's braid.
Con un hechizo la bruja envió a Rapunzel a una tierra apartada e inhóspita. Luego, ató la trenza a un garfio junto a la ventana y esperó la llegada del príncipe. Cuando éste llegó, comprendió que había caído en una trampa.
The witch sent Rapunzel to a remote and inhospitable land by means of an enchantment. Next, she strapped the plait to a hook next to the window and she waited for the prince's arrival. When he arrived, he understood that he had walked into a trap .
-Tu preciosa ave cantora ya no está -dijo la bruja con voz chillona -, ¡y no volverás a verla nunca más!
the witch said with screechy voice Your beautiful songbird she is no longer - -, oh you will never see her again!
Transido de dolor, el príncipe saltó por la ventana de la torre. Por fortuna, sobrevivió pues cayó en una enredadera de espinas. Por desgracia, las espinas le hirieron los ojos y el desventurado príncipe quedó ciego.
Overcome with pain, the prince jumped for the tower's window. Fortunately, he survived because he fell in a vine of thorns. Unfortunately, the thorns wounded his eyes and the unfortunate prince was blinded .
¿Cómo buscaría ahora a Rapunzel?
How would he now look for Rapunzel?
Durante muchos meses, el príncipe vagó por los bosques, sin parar de llorar. A todo aquel que se cruzaba por su camino le preguntaba si había visto a una muchacha muy hermosa llamada Rapunzel. Nadie le daba razón.
During many months, the prince roamed the forests, weeping without stopping. To whoever crossed his way he asked them if they had seen a very beautiful called Rapunzel. Nobody gave him explanation.
Cierto día, ya casi a punto de perder las esperanzas, el príncipe escuchó a lo lejos una canción triste pero muy hermosa. Reconoció la voz de inmediato y se dirigió hacia el lugar de donde provenía, llamando a Rapunzel.
One day, at the point of losing hope, the prince listened to a sad song in the distance but very beautiful. He recognized the voice immediately and he headed for the place from where he came, calling for Rapunzel.
Al verlo, Rapunzel corrió a abrazar a su amado. Lágrimas de felicidad cayeron en los ojos del príncipe. De repente, algo extraordinario sucedió:
When she saw him, Rapunzel ran to embrace her truelove. Tears of happiness fell from the prince's eyes. All of a sudden, something extraordinary it happened :
¡El príncipe recuperó la vista!
The prince recovered his sight!
El príncipe y Rapunzel lograron encontrar el camino de regreso hacia el reino. Se casaron poco tiempo después y fueron una pareja muy feliz.
The prince and Rapunzel were able to find the road to return to the kingdom. They got married a little while later and they were a very happy couple.
